Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Below is a list of what volunteering with us may entail. Some volunteers fill multiple roles, others just one or two.

Applying does not guarantee you will be chosen, and all volunteers must attend mandatory training days where we will provide explanations and demonstrations of what’s required.

Volunteer Roles

  • The Belmont Goats hold gate hours for the public to visit every Saturday & Sunday from 11 AM to 2 PM. Volunteers are needed to attend these gate hours to welcome visitors, answer any questions, and make sure visitors are following Chester’s Rules.

Frequency: You can volunteer for gate hours as often as you’d like but if you’re interested in gate hours, we require you volunteer at least once a month.

  • There is a set chores shift every morning and evening. Every chores volunteer has one shift a week. Chores entail refreshing waters, refilling hay, feeding mash, giving medicine to one of the goats, making more mash, and other misc. tasks around the field.

Frequency: Morning or evening, once a week, depending on shift openings.

  • Occasional maintenance includes hoof trimming and vaccinations. It requires 3-5 people to contain each goat, give treats, hold them, and perform the tasks. Previous experience is not required but we are always looking for volunteers with a background in vet care, large animal care, or general health!

Frequency: Hoof trimmings happen every 3–6 months, and vaccines are given yearly in the Spring.

  • Our outbuildings take the brunt of year-round weather and goats! There is occasional upkeep that needs to happen, as well as ideas for new structures we could build for the goats enrichment.

    Frequency: As needed.

  • We are 100% volunteer-run and community-funded. All of our current funds for things like food, medical emergencies, and field maintenance come from donations. We need help with raising those donations, as well as finding other funding streams to help keep our herd “in the hay.” Any and all ideas are welcome!

    Frequency: Ongoing.

  • We would love assistance helping us get the word out there about The Belmont Goats, including creating merch and marketing efforts to help promote the herd.

    Frequency: Ongoing.

  • The Belmont Goats would love to get to know their new neighbors in North Portland. Community outreach is somewhat new for The Belmont Goats, so volunteers are welcome to get creative on how to spread the word around the neighborhood.

    Frequency: Ongoing.

  • The Belmont Goats need volunteers to help with pick-up and drop-offs of supplies and food from Linnton Feed & Seed.

    Frequency: Ongoing.

  • In the past, The Belmont Goats have participated in neighborhood events like Farmer’s Market “Kids Day”, local street fairs, and Holiday Bazaars. The Belmont Goats are limiting the number of events they are participating in currently, but will need volunteers for the occasional local event. Volunteers are needed to represent The Belmont Goats by setting up and taking down (if there are tables or booths present) transporting goats, etc.

    Frequency: Occasional.

  • The Belmont Goats has a presence on Instagram, Facebook, Google, and our website. We need help with these various channels, keeping them fun, current, and informational.

    Frequency: Ongoing.
