Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Applying does not guarantee you will be chosen, and all volunteers must attend a mandatory orientation where we will provide explanations and demonstrations of what’s required.

Some of the opportunities we have for volunteers have specific needs and requirements. Please see the descriptions below to know what each opportunity might entail

GATE HOURS (URGENT NEED)

The Belmont Goats hold gate hours for the public to visit. Volunteers are needed to attend these gate hours to welcome visitors, answer any questions, and make sure visitors are following Chester’s Rules.

Frequency: Saturdays 11am-2pm, Sundays 11am-2pm.

Daily Chores

Volunteers are needed to feed the goats, change out water, refill the food hopper with new bales of hay when needed, check the field’s perimeter for any litter, and make sure all the goats are happy and healthy. Plus, we have two special needs goats who require special care. Chores will require training and a trial period to determine if it is a good fit for the volunteer.

Frequency: Morning and evening opportunities, once a week. Shift availability varies depending on need.

Health Maintenance

We could use some help with regular health maintenance including hoof trimming & yearly vaccinations. It requires 3-5 people to contain the goats, give treats, hold them, and perform the tasks. Hoof trimming should happen every 2-3 months, and vaccines are given yearly in the spring. Prior experience is preferable, but not required! We’re happy to show you, too!

Also, if you have any background in vet care, large animal care, or general health we’re always interested in having folks on board to keep an eye out for health issues that occasionally crop up.

Facilities Maintenance

Our outbuildings take the brunt of year-round weather and goats! There is occasional upkeep that needs to happen, as well as ideas for new structures we could build for the goats enrichment.

Frequency: Occasional / As-Needed

Fundraising / Grants

We are 100% volunteer run. All of our current funds for things like food, medical emergencies and field maintenance come from donations. We need help with raising those donations, as well as finding other funding streams to help keep our herd “in the hay.” Any and all ideas are welcome!

Frequency: Occasional

Marketing / Merch

We would love assistance helping us get the word out there about the Belmont Goats, including creating Merch to help promote the herd.

Frequency: Occasional

Community Outreach

The Belmont Goats would love to get to know their new neighbors in North Portland. Community outreach is somewhat new for The Belmont Goats, so volunteers are welcome to get creative on how to spread the word around the neighborhood.

Frequency: Occasional

Supply Pick-Up

The Belmont Goats need volunteers to help with pick-up and drop-offs of supplies (e.g. hay for eating, straw bales for bedding, medical supplies, Home Depot runs for constructing/fixing structures, etc.)

Frequency: Occasional / As-Needed

Events

In the past, The Belmont Goats have participated in neighborhood events like Farmer’s Market “Kids Day”, local street fairs, and Holiday Bazaars. The Belmont Goats are limiting the number of events they are participating in currently, but will need volunteers for the occasional local event. Volunteers are needed to represent The Belmont Goats by setting up and taking down (if there are tables or booths present), transporting a goat to the event if needed, etc.

Frequency: Occasional

Social Media

The Belmont Goats has a presence on Instagram, Facebook, Medium, Tumblr, Twitter, and others; plus we have our website. We need help with these various social media channels, keeping them fun, current, and informational.
